Established in 2015, CAVES is a contemporary art gallery based in the iconic Nicholas Building in Melbourne. Dedicated to fostering Australian artistic talent while building international partnerships, CAVES is committed to showcasing a dynamic program of exhibitions and events that reflect aesthetic, cultural, social, and political perspectives.

Over the past 10 years, CAVES has solidified its position within the Melbourne and broader Australian arts sector, delivering a sustained program of rigorous exhibitions. With a focus on supporting expanded artistic practices, CAVES provides a platform for a wide range of contemporary art approaches, having supported over 250 artists, presented over 100 on-site exhibitions and off-site projects.

Our off-site projects have included partnerships with notable institutions such as CRAFT, PHOTO Festival, The Substation and Spring 1883 (Sydney: 2017, Melbourne: 2018 and 2021, 2023). In addition, we have hosted exhibitions with international artists and their galleries, including Olphaert den Otter and Evoud van Rijn (Netherlands), Owen Armour (Denmark), Alberto Scodro (Italy), Robert Heald Gallery (New Zealand), and Goya Curtain (Japan).

Alongside supporting artists, our board is dedicated to nurturing emerging arts professionals by providing mentorship, internships and career development opportunities in partnership with Monash University.

CAVES is a not-for-profit gallery, which firmly roots itself within Melbourne’s ecology, continually striving to support and expand the landscape of contemporary art in Australia.
