Kokoro Kimura and Camille Laddawan each push their practices beyond conventional media.
Tokyo, Japan based, Kokoro Kimura’s practice looks at painting and the extension beyond traditional modes. She sees landscapes, furniture, and living things as ‘already a painting’. Working with paper, fabric, ceramics, and wood, she creates installations that respond to windows, architecture, and wallpaper, treating the space itself as part of the ‘painting’.
Camille Laddawan, based in Naarm/Melbourne, makes beaded works inscribed with text and music notation in a visual code. Drawing on her encounters with legal, welfare, and healthcare institutions, she explores institutional language, diaspora, and the difference between ancestry and heritage.
Both artists ponder expectations and ask about conventions of what we look at and what we can expect.
The exhibition opening is Saturday 24 Oct, 4pm–6pm.
CAVES is supported by the City of Melbourne through the annual arts grant.
