Eliza Hutchison’s practice explores the complex psychological relationship between viewer and photographic image, and the materiality of the photograph itself. Her image-making employs experimental in-camera and digital processes more akin to painting than conventional photography.
Hair in the Gate, a biograph and Family Photos, her first monograph, explore the biographical in relation to broader social and political contexts. When Are the Aliens Coming, similarly developed from her personal archive, is sporadic, intuitive and dispersed: a photo-poem that is part rescue fantasy, part spiritual research, conjuring a cultural moment and its psychological after-effects.
Her work invites viewers to form their own perceptual and emotional cross-links; individual photographs connect through content, form and colour, eluding explanation and resisting formal narrative structure.
